Visiting Omarama

When you are vacationing in New Zealand you will want to hop in your rental vehicle and drive to Omarama to visit. Omarama is a beautiful and thriving community that is an excellent location to visit. Between the markets and outdoor adventures, Omarama is the perfect place to experience the best in New Zealand.

Omarama is known as the gliding capital of the world and hosts several world-famous gliding competitions a year. During the summer months, professional flyers rush to Omarama to take part in the outdoor gliding festivities. While in Omarama, you can take lessons of your own, even if you have no experience. If you’d rather be a spectator, come during one of the competitions and watch the pros do it right.

Additionally, you will find three hydro lakes perfect for trout fishing, camping, and hiking. The area is a beautiful place to unwind, relax, and enjoy the great outdoors. If you are looking for an alternative to outdoor activities, you won’t want to miss the Totara Peak Gallery where you will find a slew of items and memorabilia for the show Xena Warrior Princess.

The major town you’ll want to see is Kurow. Here, you will find fabulous stone buildings with an interesting history of settlement that you can learn about from the locals or at the museum. It is highly recommend that you plan a visit the Vanishing World Museum. This showcases awe-inspiring fossils like the shark-toothed dolphin, a whale, and much more! When you are finished with all the excitement, you’ll want to eat at the Flying Pig Café, an experience in and of itself!

New Zealand offers International Fellowships and Doctoral Research Scholarships, as well as a world class education. The vividly colorful and historic landscape in New Zealand is known the world over; although many have discovered it’s also a lively, modern and intelligent community. Put those 2 factors together and you have the perfect new world to discover while earning your world class education.

New Zealand offers a more hands on learning experience, with smaller class sizes and more individual attention and support. New Zealand Travels - Off The Beaten Path

So you’re in New Zealand. You’ve got your rental. Now what? Well, you can check out a rugby game (it IS the national sport you know), or maybe head down to the beach (they are beautiful you know). But how about something a little more…off beat?

Did you know that Peter Jackson’s epic movie trilogy, Lord of the Rings, was filmed in New Zealand? What’s more, the sets are still there for you to see! Affectionately called Hobbiton by both fans and citizens, Hobbiton is located in Matamata, approximately 20 miles east of Cambridge. What was once peaceful farming ground was turned into the backdrop for several scenes in “Fellowship of the Ring” and “Return of the King”. Lucky for all of us, the farmer who owned the land decided to open il up to the public. There are several tours offered, and interesting enough: the location is available for special events! Imagine, getting married in the same set that Frodo met Gandolf for the first time. How romantic.

If rolling green hills and hobbit holes aren’t your style, how about rolling green hills and livestock? Let’s face it, if you’re in New Zealand you probably love nature. If you want to really get in touch with your roots, how about visiting the local farm? The farms offer quite a vast array of “services”. Some offer a more relaxing option, promising you sweeping views and candle light baths. Others are more rustic in their approach, letting you try things you never thought you’d ever do, like shear a sheep.

New Zealand has many attractions to entertain tourists - take a chance and try something new. You might be pleasantly surprised.
